You can call this a follow-up to an article I wrote earlier last month, it was entitled "What the XBox 360 could have been capable of." or something to that effect. Even though this will cover the aspects that exist and not that aspects that should've existed.
As we all know the XBox 360 is going to be the first next-gen console to recieve an upgrade, a substantial upgrade to be exact. The current RISC PowerPC is mfr'ed on the 90nm (nanometer) process, sometime in 2007 there'll be a new RISC PowerPC CPU mfr'ed on the 65nm process with Silicon On Insulator (SOI) and other details of which I don't currently remember.
While the newer CPU will generate lesser heat, and effectively run much more cooler compared to the current architecture...one thing comes to mind. Will anything else change?
The answer to that question is, and will remain until further notice, unknown. But the good news is the XBox 360 is getting a new CPU and the dividends will finally meet. There might even be a potential performance upgrade when playing games on the new architecture.
You won't notice a significant difference being that consoles aren't dependant on one behalf of the hardware, so as far that goes....that's out of the window. If need be, the smart thing to do would be for Microsoft to implement GDDR-4 to this "new" XBox 360 and have a bleeding edge over the PS3.
I could go into an entire instance of what Microsoft could do to make the XBox 360 the true innovator of this generation, and let's be realistic for a moment: It's not like they can't afford to upgrade the entire thing, but the outcome of that would be both good and bad.
I will end this by saying it all begins with the HD-DVD drive, that thing is a gold mine waiting to happen, and I don't mean for HD movies.
Comments wanted.
