I noticed something quirky about the four companies and their pattern of development. Although I find it funny, I like AMD and nVIDIA yet I'm not too thrilled about ATI and Intel.
So lets go through the run down...
Intel
- Invented the microprocessor
- Is always coming up with new "features" (SSE, HyperThreading, etc)
- Has had a perverbial monopoly for a while. (It still does! )
- Is now supported by Apple
- Has a good number of OEM support
- Has made a faulty product that hurt their reputation (NetBurst anyone?)
- Is making a product that claims to best its rival (Conroe)
AMD
- Has struggled for a bit (K5 and K6 were lacking)
- Has struck the lead by making an incredible product (Operton in 2003)
- Seems to "better" features currently offered (Intel is using AMD64 instead of IA-64)
- Has the better dual CPU solution (for now)
- Has a growing, but small number, of OEM support
nVIDIA
- Invented the 3D GPU
- Alway coming up with something "new" (SLI, and did feature "transparency AA" as well as SM 3.0)
- Has had a proverbial monopoly for a short period of time (After they bought 3dfx)
- Is supported by Apple
- Has a good number of game companies supporting it
- Has made a faulty product that hurt their reputation (GeForce FX)
- Is making a product that is rumored to best its rival (GeForce 8 with quad GPU's and XDR-DRAM?)
ATI
- Has struggled a bit
- Has struck the lead by making an incredible product (Radeon 9700 in 2002)
- Seems to "better" features currently offered (Crossfire and CATALYST seems to come to mind)
- Has a "better" dual graphics card solution (This is arguable, but since Crossfire has more flexibility, I'd give it to that one)
- Has a growing number of gaming companies for support
However, the companies' ethics reverse. I see nVIDIA with AMD and ATI with Intel.
