What's the difference between these two formats? I'll tell you...not a damn thing. Both operate using 405mm wavelength, both use blue lasers (the primary reason behind the reduced wavelength)...both support up to 1080p, both have comparitive HDMI compatibilty. So, why waste your money on one or the other?
Simple answer there, Blu-ray has better studio support, however HD-DVD has magically managed to release more titles, 50 or 60+ more than Blu-ray, albeit HD-DVD only having limited studio backing. It comes down to the special features, to be honest. HD-DVD players are far cheaper than your all-out Blu-ray players, even basic models cost at least $100 more than an HD-DVD player.
Ask yourself a question: Which do you want more? A format with superior support and ironically very few movies (due to problems with Blu-ray) or another format with somewhat inferior support, but a superior movie library?
...I've already made my choice and my HD-DVD player is mighty happy right about now. Blu-ray may have Star Wars...but it doesn't have Batman Begins and that's all that matters to me.

At this particular point in time it would seem as if HD-DVD has more beneficial support than Blu-ray has.
Why?
Well, that's simple.
Blu-ray, just as the PS3, has complications in the development field and this does nothing for Blu-ray, nothing at all. A few months ago HD-DVD garnered support (defectors, if you will) from Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks Pictures, and Dreamworks Animation because of it's superior features, and cost benefits. One can speculate that yet another reason the aforementioned studios decided to support HD DVD for the alotted 18 months is primarily (if not a secondary reason) is because of it's ease of programming.
Let's not forget that HD DVDs (both the set-top players and the media discs) are cheaper than Blu-ray, and for the most part, or as certain historical incidents suggest; it's not always the superior technology that wins the battle...
...It's the one people can afford.

Sony's gambles are once again going to kill them. Kind of reminds me of that giant VR-goggle assembly that Nintendo put up back in the day. Like people were going to carry it around, put it on that fscking tripod that they had and play games with it. How brilliant.
HD-DVD is probably easier because people actually bought the XBox360... and the PS3.. well you already know that story.
