Well, here we are again at the crossroads. It seems like only yesterday when the first screenshots of Soul Calibur, Tekken Tag Tournament, Final Fantasy X, etc. flowed in and blew our minds. Now, over 6 years later, this generation is coming to an end.
So what are your thoughts on "Gen-6"? Did you like it, did you hate it, were you indifferent to it? Which platform did you prefer, and why? Which platform did you like the least, and why? What were some of your favorite games from this generation?
I myself thought this generation was one of the best. There wasn't much innovation, but there was a lot of refinement in genres that were established in the 32/64-bit era, and refinement is good. It feels a lot like this generation was to the previous one as the 16-bit era was to the 8-bit era.
I liked the offerings from all four of the home consoles from this generation, although I'd have to say that the XBox was the weakest entry due to its lack of decent Japanese 3rd party support. Western developers pretty much own the XBox, and in my opinion, Western developers are still very much behind the Japanese. In terms of hardware though, I really liked the XBox. I liked the HD much better than swapping out memory cards and worrying about 3rd party memory cards (Mad Catz, etc.) getting erased. But I still felt the XBox lacked a good library.
My favorite system of this generation was easily the Dreamcast. As an avid fighting game fanatic, Dreamcast was like a dream (no pun intended) come true. But even though it was primerily known for its fighting games, DC had something for EVERYONE. If you liked RPGs, you had Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia. If you liked PC style RPGs, you had Phantasy Star. If you liked FPS games, you had Unreal. If you liked stealth, you had Headhunter. If you liked survival horror, you had Code Veronica. The list goes on and on.
My favorite games from this generation are;
Soul Calibur, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram, Dead or Alive 2, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and Dynamite Cop on Dreamcast.
Dynasty Warriors 4, Ico, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Shadow of the Colossus, Soul Calibur III, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time and Zone of the Enders: 2nd Runner on PS2.
Baten Kaitos, Bloody Roar: Primal Fury, Eternal Darkness, MGS: Twin Snakes, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil, Skies of Arcadia Legends and Soul Calibur II on GameCube.
Dreamfall, Fable, Jet Set Radio Future, Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders/Heroes, Otogi 1 & 2, Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 and Panzer Dragoon Orta on XBox.
