If you haven't heard, yet...Intel's new trademark or rather their new marketing ensemble is Leap Ahead. As in leap ahead of the competition in which oddly enough is exactly what they're doing with their lineup of goodies for the upcoming year. What does Intel have up their sleeve you ask?
Conroe.
Conroe is their new desktop CPU slated to be released next month and will go by the official name of Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Duo Extreme, respectively. With Conroe Intel is looking to turn the tides on rival AMD and "stick it to them" if you will. To be a rash technical, Conroe could be the best thing that's happened to Intel since their 4004 wafer (long time ago). Seriously, Intel fabricated a sleeper otherwise known as the 805, as in: Pentium D 805...overclock it to 4.1GHz and you've got an AMD-slayer. Will Conroe tower AMD with it's new instruction set and capabilities/performance? Only time will tell.
Insiders have already had their way with Conroe "prototypes" and already declare Conroe as the "to-have" CPU of the next generation. At least until the FX-62 or Athlon 64 X2 5000+ come about, maybe even then it won't matter because Conroe still possesses that instruction set that they'll probably never distribute with AMD (especially since they're currently in a quarrel with one another). So the real question is: "Has Intel finally smartened up or is this just hype?"
We'll all find out very soon.
