Core 2 Duo is making one hell of an impact on the market and Intel is cashing in on their latest bread-winner, Conroe the core behind the Core 2 Duo moniker. It seems with C2D Intel may have adopted a simple strategy that kept AMD on top for so long these past years; Use a lower frequency and maximize performance and leave it up to the consumer to get the most MHz out of the core. Conroe comes in several different flavors, the best of being the Core 2 Extreme X6800 which can pretty much shatter any AMD processor on the market right now.
AMD is on the opposite side of the ballpark now and they're struggling. Ironically, they're following Intel's old strategy: Use a higher frequency and somewhat (note that) diminish performance. Intel has also jumped the market by being the first to offer a quad-core CPU, otherwise known as Core 2 Quad. The question being how long is Intel going to remain on top? AMD has very little chance with K8 and an even smaller chance with K8L...although this can't be totally ruled out.
I think Intel has finally gotten it right (again) and they'll continue to get it right at least until the K10 comes about, then and only then would I say Intel has to worry about AMD knocking them off of the perch, again.
